Non-woven gauze sponges outperform woven cotton gauze on three key metrics — lower lint, less wound adherence, and higher absorbency per ply. Yet procurement teams routinely specify only "4×4 gauze sponge" without distinguishing non-woven from woven, rayon/polyester from cotton, or 4-ply non-woven equivalence to 12-ply woven. This guide covers all three, plus sterile vs non-sterile selection and a complete procurement checklist.
Non-woven gauze sponges have progressively replaced woven cotton gauze sponges in most routine clinical applications — wound cleaning, prepping, dressing changes, and general ward use. The shift is driven by measurably better clinical performance: lower lint, less wound adherence, faster wicking, and higher absorbency per ply. Despite this, procurement specifications frequently treat the two interchangeably — specifying "4×4 gauze sponge" without distinguishing non-woven from woven, creating inconsistent supply and missed performance improvements.

| Property | Non-woven gauze sponge (4-ply rayon/poly) | Woven cotton gauze sponge (12-ply) |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Bonded non-woven fabric — fibres mechanically bonded, no weaving | Plain-weave cotton fabric — same as medical gauze |
| Lint generation | Significantly lower — bonded structure resists fraying and fibre shedding. Source: McKesson product description. | Higher — cotton fibres shed during handling and wound contact, contributing to wound bed contamination |
| Wound adherence | Virtually non-adherent to granulating wound tissue — smoother bonded surface. Source: Medline Deluxe, Caring brand product descriptions. | Higher adherence — woven cotton fibres can bond to healing tissue during dressing changes, causing trauma on removal |
| Absorbency per ply | Higher per ply — 4-ply non-woven provides absorbency equivalent to or exceeding 12-ply woven at same 4×4 size. Source: Medline — "more absorbent... than traditional woven cotton gauze pads." | Lower per ply — requires more layers for equivalent absorbency |
| Wicking speed | Faster — rayon/polyester structure wicks fluid rapidly away from wound surface. Source: Medline — "significantly faster wicking ability." | Slower initial wicking — cotton absorbs well but initial wicking is slower than rayon blend |
| Cost | Typically lower per unit for equivalent clinical performance | Higher per unit — more layers required for equivalent performance |
| Appropriate for wound contact | Yes — lower lint and adherence make non-woven preferred for wound contact | Yes — but higher lint and adherence risk vs non-woven |
When switching from woven to non-woven gauze, the lower ply count of non-woven products can appear to indicate reduced quality. This is incorrect. Non-woven rayon/polyester construction is significantly more efficient per ply than woven cotton — 4-ply non-woven delivers performance comparable to or exceeding 12-ply woven at the same sponge size. Medline specifically states their non-woven gauze reduces "the number of sponges that have to be used for each procedure" due to increased material weight and wicking efficiency. Evaluate on absorbency performance and lint characteristics — not ply count.
Rayon (viscose) is a regenerated cellulose fibre with extremely high moisture absorption — it can absorb 10–11 times its own weight in water (compared to cotton at approximately 7–8 times). In the rayon/polyester non-woven blend, rayon provides the fluid uptake capacity and polyester provides the mechanical integrity that prevents a saturated sponge from tearing apart during use. This combination delivers a product that outperforms both pure cotton woven gauze (lower lint, faster wicking) and pure cotton non-woven (higher absorbency). Specifying "rayon/polyester blend" in procurement ensures the higher-performance non-woven formulation rather than a lower-specification cotton-only product.
Beyond the three standard sizes, custom dimensions are available for institutional procurement. Kingphar's non-woven gauze sponge product line (/non-woven-gauze-sponge-4x4-customized/) specifically offers custom specifications — including non-standard sizes, ply counts, material compositions, and packaging configurations for OEM and institutional buyers.
