ABD Absorbent Dressing Pad
3-layer high-absorbency wound dressing — non-woven facing, cellulose fluff absorbent core, moisture-resistant backing. Army Battle Dressing origin. Also called abdominal pad or combine dressing. Indicated for post-surgical, trauma, and heavily exuding wounds. Primary or secondary dressing use.

3-Layer Construction
What Each Layer Does
1
Non-woven outer facing
Soft non-woven fabric contacts the wound or primary dressing. Rapidly wicks moisture into the absorbent core. Non-woven construction minimises lint shedding into the wound bed — a critical advantage over woven gauze for open wound use.
2
Cellulose fluff core
Thick cellulose fiber layer — the defining component. Absorbs and disperses wound exudate throughout the pad, preventing fluid pooling at the wound contact site. Provides the high absorption capacity distinguishing ABD pads from standard gauze. All four edges sealed to prevent cellulose fiber migration (linting) into wounds.
3
Moisture-resistant backing
Fluid-resistant outer backing prevents absorbed exudate from striking through to clothing or bandaging. Maintains a dry outer surface. Keeps secondary fixation bandage/tape dry, maintaining adhesion for longer.
Sealed edges are mandatory — not optional
Cellulose fibers from an unsealed ABD pad edge can shed into the wound bed. Retained fibers are a foreign body — triggering inflammation, delaying healing, and increasing infection risk. Kingphar ABD pads have all four edges heat-sealed. Always request sealed edge confirmation from any supplier — "low-linting" and sealed edges are different claims.
Product Features
Why Kingphar ABD Pad
💧
High Absorbency — Cellulose Fluff Core
Thick cellulose fluff core absorbs and disperses large volumes of wound exudate. Significantly higher capacity than standard gauze pads or island dressings — suitable for heavily draining post-surgical and trauma wounds.
🚫
Moisture-Resistant Strike-Through Barrier
Fluid-resistant outer backing layer prevents absorbed exudate from striking through to the outside of the dressing. Maintains a dry outer surface and secondary bandage adhesion.
🔒
All Edges Heat-Sealed
All four edges sealed to prevent cellulose fiber migration into the wound bed. Critical for open wound use — cellulose linting is a foreign body risk in wounds.
↕
Primary & Secondary Use
Use directly on post-surgical incisions (primary) or over a primary wound contact layer such as vaseline gauze or non-adherent pad (secondary absorbent boost). For granulating wounds, a non-adherent contact layer is recommended between wound and ABD pad.
✅
Sterile — Individual Peel-Open Pack
EO sterilized (ISO 11135) or gamma sterilized (ISO 11137), SAL 10⁻⁶. ISO 11607 packaging validation. Non-sterile bulk pack also available. Sterile is the default specification for all clinical ward procurement.

Sizes Available
Standard Sizes — Select by Wound Coverage Requirement
5×9 in
approx. 13×23 cm
Most widely procured. General post-op and trauma wound management.
8×7.5 in
approx. 20×19 cm
Larger near-square format for wounds requiring more coverage in both dimensions.
8×10 in
approx. 20×25 cm
Large post-surgical and significant trauma wounds.
10×30 in
approx. 25×76 cm
Multi-trauma pad. Extensive wounds, large burns, pressure dressings.
Size selection rule — the pad must extend beyond wound edges
Select a pad that extends at least 2–3 cm beyond the wound edges on all sides. A 5×9 inch pad is not appropriate for a wound that measures 5×9 inches. The margin protects surrounding skin from exudate contamination and ensures fixation tape contacts only the pad, not the wound.
Critical Procurement Note
ABD pad ≠ Laparotomy sponge — confirm before ordering
ABD pads are external wound dressings — placed over closed incisions or open surface wounds. Laparotomy sponges are intra-operative gauze sponges used inside the open body cavity during surgery — they contain an x-ray detectable BaSO₄ thread for retained surgical item detection. The two products must not be substituted for each other. Before placing any order referencing "abdominal pad" or "combine pad," confirm with the clinical team whether they mean the external dressing (ABD pad) or the intra-operative sponge (laparotomy sponge). See our Laparotomy Sponge product page if intra-operative use is required.
