Cotton Stockinette
100% cotton or cotton/viscose blend (67%/33% common). Soft, breathable, absorbs perspiration under cast for patient comfort. Steam sterilizable at 121°C (L&R Global IFU confirmed). Off-white or beige. Standard for most orthopaedic departments.

Waterproof casting systems
Synthetic Stockinette
Polyester or polyester/cotton blend. More moisture-resistant than cotton — preferred when the cast will be exposed to water. Reduces maceration risk under waterproof fiberglass casting systems. White colour.

Seamless Circular Knit
No seams — slides over limb as a continuous tube. Eliminates seam pressure points under the cast, reducing irritation during extended wear. Seamless construction is critical for stump care and paediatric applications.
3× Lateral Stretch
Stretches up to 3× original diameter laterally (TruMedical, Tex Care product documentation). Conforms snugly to the limb without wrinkling. Accommodates initial post-injury swelling during casting application.
Steam Sterilizable at 121°C
Cotton stockinette can be steam sterilized at 121°C for surgical applications (L&R Global IFU confirmed). Sterile pre-cut formats also available for intra-operative use — eliminating the need for in-house sterilization.
Breathable — Skin Comfort
Open knit structure allows air circulation and moisture absorption from the skin during extended cast wear. Reduces heat and moisture accumulation — important for patient comfort during multi-week cast immobilisation.

Standard clinical widths: 2" (fingers/small paediatric), 3" (wrist/small ankle), 4" (forearm/adult ankle — most procured), 6" (knee/thigh), 9"–12" (stump/body/surgical coverage). Continuous roll and pre-cut formats.

Stockinette ≠ Undercast padding — both are required for casting
Stockinette is the innermost skin interface layer — it provides no cushioning. Undercast padding (orthopaedic wadding) is the next layer over the stockinette — it provides cushioning over bony prominences. Both are required. Never omit the padding layer. See our Undercast Padding product page.
