Y
Y-Cut (T-Cut / T-Slot)
Straight incision opening into wider notch — wraps around tube flanges, stoma plates, and drainage connectors. Lies flat on both sides of protruding hardware. Standard for tracheostomy and gastrostomy tube site dressings. PMC8411156 (2021) confirms gauze drain sponges for tracheostomy sites with minimal to moderate secretions.
Use for: Tracheostomy · G-tube · J-tube · Flanged surgical drains · CVC tunnelled exit sites
IV · PICC · Central line · Chest tube
I
I-Cut (Slit / Split Cut)
Single straight cut approximately halfway through — two flaps separate around the tube. Simple geometry for sites where only the tube exits the skin without flange hardware. Eliminates bedside cutting with scissors — standardised slit size, no sterility compromise from cutting.
Use for: IV cannula sites · PICC lines · Central lines · Chest tubes · Non-flanged drain sites
Wrong cut shape = inadequate site coverage
I-cut placed at a tracheostomy flange will not lie flat — the straight flaps cannot wrap around the disc, leaving secretion accumulation gaps. Specify cut type by application. See our Y/I Cut Gauze Swabs Procurement Guide for full clinical selection guidance.
Product Features
Why Kingphar Y/I Cut Gauze Swabs
✂️
Pre-Cut — No Bedside Scissors
Standardised cut size and shape — every swab identical. Eliminates bedside cutting which introduces inconsistency and sterility risk. Ready to apply directly from sterile pack. Source: Vakly product description — "eliminating the need for additional instruments."
💧
6-Ply Non-Woven — Low Lint at Cut Edge
Non-woven construction resists fraying at the pre-cut edge — important because the slit creates a raw edge. Lower lint at the cut edge reduces fibre contamination risk at drain and IV sites. Virtually non-adherent to peri-stomal skin — trauma-free removal.
📦
Sterile Individually Wrapped — 2/Pouch
Each pair of swabs in individually sealed sterile peel-open pouch. Maintains sterility until point of use. Peel-open design enables aseptic presentation to the sterile field without contaminating the remaining supply.
📐
Two Standard Sizes
2"×2" (5×5 cm) for paediatric and small IV sites — 35 pouches/box (70 swabs). 4"×4" (10×10 cm) for adult tracheostomy, G-tube, and drain sites — 25 pouches/box (50 swabs). Source: Vakly product specifications.
🔬
Clinically Indicated — PMC 2021 Guideline
Gauze drain sponges (Y-cut) are the indicated dressing for tracheostomy sites with minimal to moderate secretions per PMC8411156 (2021 clinical review of tracheostomy and gastrostomy wound care). Provides evidence base for formulary inclusion.
